Vatican conference to examine 1990 Code of Canon Law for Eastern churches

At an October 7 press conference in Rome, Vatican officials briefed reporters about a conference taking place this weekend, marking the 20th anniversary of the promulgation of a new Code of Canon Law for the Eastern Catholic churches.

The conference will draw 400 participants, including representatives of the Orthodox churches, to discuss the historical development of canon law in the Eastern churches, the unique aspects of Eastern Church law, and the ecumenical influence of the new code adopted in 1990.

The press conference was chaired by Archbishop Francesco Coccopalmerio, the president of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts—which is the top Vatican body dealing with canon law.

He was joined by Archbishop Cyril Vasil, SJ, the secretary of the Congregation for the Eastern Churches.
