Hail Mary tops most popular prayer poll

The Republic of Ireland may be a country is on its knees, but some are simply saying their all-time favourite prayer.

According to a new book based on information from over 800 children drawn from 70 parishes across the Diocese of Limerick and neighbouring dioceses, the 'Hail Mary' is the number one prayer for families.

'Prayers of our People' was compiled following a survey conducted by sixth class and secondary school children across the diocese.

More than 2,000 people were canvassed for the book, with the children providing their own favourite prayers, and also canvassing the opinion of their siblings, parents and grandparents.

The top 10 shows the 'Hail Mary' taking pride of place, with the 'Angel of God' relegating the 'Our Father' into third place.

A selection of Night Prayers and Morning Prayers were fourth and fifth respectively, with the 'Act of Sorrow' sixth choice and 'Glory Be to the Father' seventh.

The book was inspired by a 2008 Diocesan Youth Project, which invited primary and secondary schools from all over the diocese to submit their and their parents' or grandparents' favourite prayers.

The book is on sale for €6 and is available from the Limerick Diocesan Pastoral Centre, Denmark St, Limerick.

The proceeds from the sale go towards Youth Ministry in the Diocese of Limerick.
